Love of the Trinity
John 14.15-21
Today's Gospel brings our the all embracing and encompassing love we expect from God. It is a brings the reminder that not everyone feels comfortable with this concept or even love. Jesus' disciples felt this love first hand; that is who these words were said to. As I walk amongst my new parish I already have heart stories how it can be so difficult for people to relate to a loving Father; the difficulty is real for them and causes great conflict when reading the scriptures.
In most of the western world (I think), today is Mother's day. For many this is a day to celebrate love, the love of their mothers. But with all "holiday" events, there is another side. Last year I prayed intercessions that included a prayer for those who's Mother's Day is not joyful; broken families, lost mothers or children, all of these can cause pain on a day which has so many reminders around us. Suicide lines and help services will get more calls today...

When we look at the family we are adopted into; the many brothers and sisters we have three paternal figures. The Father, The Spirit and even the Son (think the older sibling who helps look after us as infants). All who love us, who want the best for us, who don't want to control us but want us to flourish in the greatest ways possible. For many this is hard to understand, many spend their lives trying to understand this; no one will understand it fully this side of creation but for me, this is a fact. It is one I hold with joy and one I hope and long for each and every day.
